The Ultimate Guide to Gorilla Trekking in Uganda edit
Gorilla trekking in Uganda is a life-changing experience that brings you face-to-face with the magnificent mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Here's everything you need to know to prepare for this incredible adventure.
Why Uganda for Gorilla Trekking?
Uganda is home to approximately half of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, hosts around 450 gorillas across several habituated families.
Best Time to Go
The best months for gorilla trekking are during the dry seasons:
- June to September - Long dry season with clear trails
- December to February - Short dry season with fewer tourists
However, gorilla trekking is possible year-round. The wet seasons offer lower permit prices and fewer crowds.
What to Expect on Trek Day
Your day begins early at the park headquarters for a briefing around 7:30 AM. Rangers will assign you to a gorilla family based on your fitness level. The trek can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are located.
Once you find the gorillas, you'll have exactly one hour to observe and photograph them from a distance of 7 meters. This hour passes incredibly quickly, so soak in every moment.
Essential Packing List
- Sturdy waterproof hiking boots
- Long pants and long-sleeved shirt
- Rain jacket
- Gardening gloves for gripping vegetation
- Plenty of water
- Snacks for energy
- Camera with extra batteries
Permit Information
Gorilla permits in Uganda cost $700 per person and must be booked well in advance, especially during peak seasons. Each gorilla family can only be visited by 8 tourists per day to minimize human impact.
